october is global ambedkar month!

On October 14, 1956 Dr. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism, starting a Buddhist revival across India.

We are celebrating this "diksha", or Buddhist conversion, with a month of festivities, and invite our Jai Bhim friends around the world to send us descriptions and pictures of your own celebrations. Jai Bhim!

October 2011: This year we celebrated our third annual Ambedkar Month,  at The SF  Buddhist Center, honoring Dr. Ambedkar's legacy and the international Jai Bhim social justice movement he has inspired.

On October 7th we celebrated Indian Film Night, launching this year's Ambedkar Month with a screening of  the classic Indian film by Satyajit Ray,  "Apur Sansar", with delicious Indian pizza generously donated by Zante's. Take a look at our photo album for pictures of last year's movie night. On October 25th we made  presentation to 2 World History classes at Westmoor High School in Daly City, sharing Dr. Ambedkar's story with American high schol students. And on October 29th we held our 3rd annual Barefoot Bhangra Party.

Maitriveer Nagarjuna, scholar, Buddhist Order Member, and Director of Jai Bhim International, explain its history and its significance for the global Buddhist movement. Maitriveer recorded his talk at the site of the Great Mass Conversion in Nagpur, and spent October 14th, 2009 on retreat in Bodh Gaya, the place of the Buddha's Enlightenment.
